Cougar Life review: who it's for and what to watch

Updated October 12, 2026 · Match Parfait editorial team · How we rate

Short answer

Cougar Life is an age-gap dating site for older women and the younger men who want to date them, and in 2015 it belonged to the same parent company as Ashley Madison. It runs on credits: women can start conversations for free, while most paid actions use credit packages. It suits that niche well; for married or attached people who need maximum discretion, Victoria Milan remains our #1.

01Who owns Cougar Life?

In July 2015, Krebs on Security described Avid Life Media as the Toronto firm that owned Ashley Madison along with “related hookup sites Cougar Life and Established Men.” In 2016, Avid Life Media renamed itself ruby. The FTC's December 2016 settlement names the parent as Ruby Corp., formerly Avid Life Media.

Today, the Cougar Life iPhone app is published by a developer named Cougar Life Inc., while the Ashley Madison Android app is published by Ruby Life Inc. We couldn't access cougarlife.com's legal pages to confirm the current corporate chain, so we won't go further than this: historically, same family as Ashley Madison; currently, check the terms for the operator's name.

One detail from the 2015 breach: the Impact Team's demand targeted Ashley Madison and Established Men, and said the group's other sites could stay online. Cougar Life wasn't the site named in the ultimatum.

02Who it's for

Cougar Life's App Store listing is clear about the audience: an open-minded place for confident, independent women to meet younger men, and for younger men who want to date older women. That's the whole concept, and it's a narrower brief than a general affair site.

In practice that means the dynamic is set from the first message. Women don't pay to start a conversation, men who want to stand out spend credits, and nobody has to explain why they're interested in an older or younger partner. For people who've felt judged for that preference on mainstream apps, that alone is a relief.

It isn't built specifically for married or attached people. Some members will be in relationships, many won't. If your main concern is discretion around a marriage, a platform designed for that situation will serve you better. If what you want is an age-gap dynamic, this is a niche site that has been doing exactly that for over a decade, by its own description.

03How it works

The structure is the classic credits model used by Ashley Madison's family of sites. Here's what the official app listing describes.

FeatureWhat the listing says
DownloadFree, with in-app purchases
Women messagingWomen can start a conversation with anyone at no charge
CreditsActions that need credits prompt you to buy a credit package, or you can go to the credits store
Priority MailA few credits push your message to the top of her inbox
Private photosAny member can upload photos and mark them private, visible only to people you choose
Message historyMessages are stored for 90 days

We don't list prices because they change and vary by package. Check the price and the number of credits shown before checkout, and work out what one conversation will really cost you.

04What we like

The concept is honest. You know what everyone on the site is there for, which saves a lot of awkward explaining. For women, free messaging removes the paywall at the first step. And private photos give both sides some control over who sees what.

The private photo system deserves a mention for discretion. You can keep a public profile vague and share clearer pictures only with people you've chatted with. That's not anonymity, but it's real control over who sees your face.

The app listing also includes a line many sites don't bother with: the photos in its marketing are of models, for illustration only. That's the kind of small disclosure we like seeing.

  • Clear age-gap niche, no guessing about intentions.
  • Women can start conversations for free.
  • Private photos you share selectively.
  • Long-running brand, not a pop-up site.

05Watch-outs before you pay

Credits are where costs creep up. Every paid action eats into a package, and features like Priority Mail are designed to make you spend a little more on each message. Set a budget before you buy, not after. A small package is a cheap way to find out whether anyone in your area actually answers.

  • Billing: we didn't find a published billing descriptor for Cougar Life. Check the checkout page or ask support what will show on your statement.
  • App store purchases: if you buy credits on an iPhone, your statement says apple.com/bill, but the receipt and purchase history name the app.
  • Corporate history: the Ashley Madison family's 2016 FTC settlement included allegations of fake “engager” profiles. Read Cougar Life's current terms for any disclosure about site-created profiles before paying.
  • Scammers: as on any dating site, be wary of anyone who quickly asks to move to another app or brings up money.
  • Discretion: your profile is visible to members who search, so use the private photo option for anything identifiable.
  • Exit plan: find the account deletion option and the credit expiry rules in the terms before you buy, not when you want out.

Ask support in writing what appears on your statement and how to delete your data. Keep the replies.

06Cougar Life or Victoria Milan?

They answer different questions. Cougar Life answers “I want to date across an age gap.” Victoria Milan answers “I'm married or attached and need this to stay private.”

If you're in the second group, Victoria Milan is our #1 for its privacy tools: photo blur and masks, private keys, a panic button, automatic log-out, and a statement line that doesn't name the site. If you're in the first group and single or openly non-monogamous, Cougar Life is a sensible, focused choice.

Bottom line: a good niche site for older women and younger men. Not the tool we'd pick for keeping a marriage-related secret.
